What happens in the second after a card is tapped or entered online: the acquirer, card network and issuing bank authorise the payment, with 3-D Secure for online payments.
Drawing diagram…
Card authorisation sequence: the customer pays on a merchant site, the payment gateway sends the request to the acquiring bank, which forwards it through the card network (Visa/Mastercard/RuPay) to the issuing bank. For online payments the issuer runs 3-D Secure and the customer enters an OTP. The issuer checks balance and fraud rules, approves with an auth code, and the response returns along the same path; settlement happens later in a daily batch.
